Ads, as approx % of newspaper revenue: < 50% in 1880s; 55% in 1900; 70% in 1929 (60% in 1932); 70% in 1950; 75% in 1980; 75% in 2010.
I still love the Times, but to restrict access to web content *by device* is disastrously stupid.
Clarification: Do the right thing for your users—find them where they are, simplify their lives—and your app vs. web decisions will follow.
