@dabernathy89 Previously it was really hard to make a new currency. Now it is easier and we can try out different ideas for different problems.
@dabernathy89 With the explosion of the web we saw lots of different things with information. Cryptocurrencies are the same thing but with money.
@dabernathy89 One example is Bitcoin Gold that wants to change how work is verified to prevent highly specialized mining equipment from dominating.
@dabernathy89 There are so many different coins because of experimentation. They can take bitcoin and tweak it.
@dabernathy89 If they find the right hash to verify a transaction they get a small fee.
@dabernathy89 It’s math based and decentralized so the greater community handles verifying the transactions so no fraud. This is what mining is.
@dabernathy89 Think of it like Git for Money. All transactions are recorded sequentially in the blockchain.
And last night cryptocurrencies finally clicked for me. And man are they awesome.
@hakimel Congrats! Now your time has been cut 4x
Because LinkedIn isn’t annoying enough as it is… twitter.com/techmeme/status/9188…
@greglinch I feel like all I do is offer snide comments on people’s tweets. Mastadon is kind of fun today.
@jannatul91t YAY WordPress!
@greglinch I’m just making small talk on the Twitter net.
A sample:
Much like Twitter, everyone’s first Mastadon posts are a bunch of “What is this thing?” and “How does this even work?”
You can find me all confused and perplexed about a decentralized Twitter clone over at mastodon.social/@kingkool68
@elgreg Cryptocurrencies are pretty neat.
@AdeyLady123 TOT
@JoAnnStilley Cars will drive themselves by then, right?
